Belgrade (Belgrado or Београд 2023) is a beautiful city of almost 2 million citizens in its metropolitan area. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and the third largest city of the Danube River. Beograd means literally the White City. Belgrade is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and it was founded on the shores of the Sava and the Danube rivers on the Pannonia Plain of the Balkan Peninsula. The city was long part of the Byzantine Empire and adopted the Greek Orthodox Religion. The Greeks Kyrillos and Methodios developed the Serbian alphabet which was based on the Greek Alphabet. Later on the city came under Hungarian and Ottoman rule and the Serbians resisted the foreign empires with continuous wars and the struggle for independence which left the city in ruins. Belgrade was however well defended at Kalemegdan with the Belgrade Fortress. During the Yugoslavian War the city was bombed by NATO forces. Nowadays the city is very vivid and lively and at the waterfront (Београд на води) many new skyscrapers are being built. The main building is the Belgrade Tower.
