Security forces were deployed in Van, close to the Iranian border, and other Kurdish-majority areas, where they used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters, who burned barricades and threw fireworks and petrol bombs at armoured vehicles. The demonstrations began after Abdullah Zeydan, the candidate from the Kurdish-rooted DEM Party who took 55 per cent of the vote in Van, was denied the official certificate of office by the Higher Electoral Board.
