The main characters are Robin, a boy born to a human from the planet Parta (Planet Paluda in the original comics), and six robots from the Rainbow Squadron. The series is split into two parts: from episode 1, “The Alien Monster Appears,“ to episode 26, “The Last Day of Planet Parta,“ in which they fight against the Parta aliens’ invasion of Earth, and from episodes 27 to 48, which follow the battle with Planet Parta, each episode is a self-contained suspense story, comedy, action drama, and more. When the Emperor of Parta, a planet in the reverse galaxy, learns that it is destined to explode into pieces, he tries to conquer Earth by force and emigrate there. First, he sends a scientist named Porto as a spy. His true identity is discovered by the people of Earth, and he is chased and injured, but he is touched by the kindness of Sumiko, an Earthling who helped him without distinction between friend and foe, and betrays the planet Parta. As a result, he is taken to the planet Parta and imprisoned, but before that, he secretly creates six robots to defend the Earth, and entrusts the boy born to him and Sumiko to the robots. The boy is raised with love by the robots, especially by the nurse robot Lili, who embodies Sumiko’s kindness, and grows into a boy with both a strong sense of justice and kindness. Then, at the age of 12, two years before the X-Day of the planet Parta, the boy learns his mission and leads the six robots to fight to protect the Earth from the invasion of the planet Parta. This boy is Robin, and he and the six robots are the Rainbow Squadron.
