In the Swedish traditional ballad “Herr Mannelig“, a female troll in love with a Christian tries to give him her heart, but he violently rejects her because she is only a mountain troll and not a Christian lady. In this new version, Eihwar has restored the troll’s credentials and, this time, she finds herself in the position of the one who is courted by the Christian, who is rejected because she refuses to bend the knee to Christian morality.
ᚨ Lyrics:
“Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig,
You are so proud on your stone,
You would marry me, oh you would marry me
And claim my heart as your own,
I would agree oh, if you were a troll,
Not a knight of the cross, so cold.
I won’t be a slave to your morality,
Nor shall I bend the knee.“
