Circle of Ourobous - Thurisa. 2022.

Released simultaneously with “Autuala“, these both albums mark the 21st and 22nd full-length releases from the Finnish masters of ethereal Black Metal experimentalism. Unlike “Autuala“ however, which is delivered more or less on the same vein as the project’s output in recent years, with “Thurisa“ we see a return to older pathways and currents of thought. That should come as a surprise, wouldn’t these be recordings that already date back to around 10 years ago. And in fact, one can see the clear streams of spirituality and aural texturing that was being explored by the duo in around 2011-2013, with remarkable albums such as “Eleven Fingers“, “The Final Egg“ or “The Lost Entrance of the Just“. I’d argue “The Lost Entrance of the Just“ is the one that resembles the most with “Thurisa“, in its slow, engulfing, almost Drone Ambient approach to both guitar playing as production, cradling the listener in this muffled, womb-like sound texture, as having gone through spiritual death and being seemingly reborn, slowly rising from the sea depths, starring at the crippled dim sun’s light timidly descending through the desolate ocean waters. In this approach a lot of dissonance is used to create the reverberating underwater-like background drone, but while this element is surely a bit disorienting and crude, Atvar’s beautiful melodies always carry the listener into warmer currents of introspection and beauty. The keyboards, particularly the droning organ-like ones seem to be the most defining element to this record when compared to its closest relatives, surely enriching the atmosphere in it, bringing a more fantastic, otherwordly presence. Also characteristic to this era of Circle of Ouroborus one notices the lyrics and song titles presented in English, something Klemi hadn’t done since 2013, and carry his always beautiful cryptic spiritual poetry.
