Swivel Step (Egyptian) - All About Arms

February 2020 Move of the Month Club: Swivel Step (Egyptian) Week 3 – All About Arms Although the star of the Swivel Step is the bouncy, swishy hips, the arms play an important role in creating a strong frame that highlights rather than distracts. Get into the nitty gritty details of the arms in this annotated study, which also features common corrections to help you adjust and refine your Swivel Step. Here are three things to keep in mind while you’re practicing your Swivel Step arms: (1) Keep the arm shape – The shape of the arms doesn’t actually change in the Swivel Step. Maintain the gentle curve as you pull the arm straight back and avoid bending or straightening the elbow. (2) Don’t be too stiff – While you want to maintain the arm shape and keep the arms close together, you don’t want to be too rigid! Allow for controlled but natural movement. (3) Focus on pulling the active arm back – Contract the muscles in your back to pull the arm straight back as you twist the hip forward. This is an active motion. Allow the other arm to fall slightly forward in a passive motion. This will create balanced opposition between the arms and hip.
