A Major Eruption Occurred; The Media & Advisory Systems Missed it

A major volcanic eruption of the Bagana volcano occurred in July of 2023 on the island of Bougainville with a population of 300,000 people, triggering the reported evacuations of approximately 8,000 residents. Yet, despite a taller than 50,000 foot eruption plume, warning systems meant to detect explosive volcanic eruption and warn aircraft did not detect this event until around 48 hours later.
