The Rifle, No.4 Mk.1 was adopted by Britain in 1941 and was essentially an updated and simplified version of the SMLE, which had been re-designated the Rifle, No.1. It retained the same .303 British cartridge and had essentially the same handling and function. Notable changes were a heavier barrel and an improved sight using an aperture. The Rifle No.4 continued to see improvements through WWII and continued to see service post war.
