Hydrangea / Fuchsia Display - Fitzroy Gardens Conservatory

HYDRANGEA / FUCHSIA DISPLAY - JANUARY 2019 Around mid-November the Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) and Fuchsia (Fuchsia x hybrida) display is installed and maintained for nearly three months through the summer period. The main plants in the display are Hydrangeas and Fuchsia baskets, plus Astilbe, Nicotiana, Impatiens, Ageratum and Coleus as fill in plants. At least 500 pots of Hydrangea are used. The varieties provide flowers that are red/pink, purple/blue and white. A few species Hydrangeas are also shown. Some 60 Fuchsias in 35 cm hanging baskets are hung above the display. Hydrangeas are wonderful, hardy shrubs, which still some people think of as old-fashioned plants. They are best in a semi shaded position, but some hardy varieties will tolerate full sun. The most important thing to remember is not to let them dry out, or they will wilt. They need regular watering, particularly in late spring and through summer. In most areas hydrangeas can be pruned during winter. Leave stems that have not flowered as these will flower the following season. A number of plant types are placed in groups throughout the display. Pots of Astilbe include flowers which are pink, white and red. Nicotiana may include flowers which are red, lime green, white and pink. Mixed Impatiens of bright colours are used; Ageratum with flowers, which include purple and white; and Coleus, which are grown for their coloured foliage.
