GÖKTÜRKLERs tried to invade China in 626. They almost succeeded. The Tang counterattacked and conquered the entire Turkic khanate by 655. Li Jing commanded the main prong of the attacks against the Eastern Turkic Khaganate, with the generals Li Shiji, Xue Wanche (薛萬徹), and Chai Shao commanding the other prongs, but with Li Jing in overall command. In spring 630, Li Jing’s forces, surprising Ashina Duobi’s, captured Dingxiang (定襄, in modern Hohhot, Inner Mongolia), approaching Ashina Duobi’s imperial tent.
