Former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for ‘exposing official secrets’.
On Sunday there were scuffles between police and Khan’s supporters, this latest move may now further inflame tensions.
Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in 2022 and has been under investigation for a range of alleged offences ever since.
Khan is currently serving a three-year prison sentence after being convicted of corruption last year.
The former prime minister and cricket star claims the charges against him are all politically motivated.
Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party is one of the three major political parties in Pakistan.
Khan has been barred from standing in future elections on account of him having a criminal conviction.
This latest prison sentence may now further inflame political tensions in the run-up to the national parliamentary elections next week.
