“What have I done, but what was expected of me?“
Alicent is my 100% favorite character from HOTD, and that is why: she’s a tragic figure, influenced by her mother’s death and used by her own father in purpose to gain his political ambitions: and yet, as her uncle pointed out, she stood tall. I’m not saying that she’s perfect or saint, she’s far from that, but she is overly trusting and has a pure heart, and probably that will be her downfall. But what I absolutely love about her, she teaches on her mistakes and becomes stronger through them.
As for Alicent and Viserys, some people say she didn’t love him, but the thing is, she wasn’t supposed to (you should be dumb to expect a young beautiful girl to fall in love with a man more than twice her age). Their marriage was nothing but a political alliance orchestrated by Otto, though they both obviously developed some warm feelings for each other.
I think Alicent fully understood what she was in to from the very beginning and played her role quite well, but what she should be respected for is taking care of the king through all these years when even his own blood (Rhaenyra and Daemon) abandoned him. Even Rhaenyra herself confessed that it was Alicent who stood by Viserys and treated him with respect and loyalty. I feel sorry for her and find her path terribly sad because her own father forced her to spend her best years beside an old sick man out of his own ambition and greed for power. Despite all of that, she didn’t get cruel like Cersei or phony like Margaery, she remained herself and that’s why I like her so much.
