I was constantly itching, not only from the filth but from the bugs that buzzed around me, their noise the only lullaby I knew. One day, something changed. A kind face appeared, and I was lifted from the remains of the yard, the remains of my life. This person saw my empty, distant gaze and felt my pain. They decided to take a chance on me, even though they had no space or money. They saw hope in my eyes, a spark that had not yet been extinguished. You know, I had forgotten what it felt like to be free, to run without the heavy, clinking chain that bound me. The days were gray, the nights darker still, filled with a terrifying emptiness. Sometimes, the rain would come, and I would feel a fleeting sense of relief as the drops washed away the grime. But soon enough, the chain’s clinking would pull me back to my harsh reality. Food and clean water were distant dreams. The little they threw at me was mixed with my own waste, humiliating me further. I had no choice but to lie down and wait for death to come. The mold in my feces, the smoke and soot, the absence of clean water and scarce food—all of it wore me down.
