Core Collapse in a Rapidly Rotating Stellar Core

Rapidly spinning cores of massive stars collapse to rotationally-deformed, potentially non-axisymmetric proto-neutron stars, which emit strong gravitational waves detectable from anywhere in the Milky Way by the international network of second-generation gravitational-wave detectors. This movie is a rendition of simulation data from a fully general-relativistic 3D simulation of Christian Ott et al. 2007 (PRL 98, 261101) visualized by Ralf Kaehler (Zuse Institute, Berlin and KIPAC, Stanford) in 2006/2007.
