This Week in Volcano News; Status of the Mexico City Volcano, Unrest at Bulusan
This week saw the continued volcanic eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico City. Located 70 kilometers to the southeast of Mexico City, it in the last week produced an increasing duration of volcanic tremors. Meanwhile, the United States was the site of a new volcanic eruption as the Ahyi Seamount erupted anew in the Northern Mariana Islands. And, in the Philippines, the Bulusan volcano’s subsidence recently turned into minor uplift, with two shallow earthquake swarms occurring in the month of May. This video will discuss these stories & list the 42 volcanoes which are actively erupting across the planet.
As a clarification, the “increasing activity“ at Popocatepetl does not indicate an increased eruptive output in the last week compared to the prior week or an increased number of explosions, but rather only an increased duration of volcanic tremor events this week when compared to the prior week. This in my opinion implies the movement of magma and volcanic gasses.
This video’s thumbnail image displays a phreatic eruption at Kilauea in 2018, which is not actively erupting as of May 26th, 2023. This image does not represent the current activity at the Popocatepetl volcano, which is largely vulcanian rather than phreatic.
