Walking - E Health Exercise - Instructional series for Eurythmy
In this video we show you the Walking E - Health exercise by Rudolf Steiner. It is performed by two people.
First we practise the E gesture.
For the E, we cross our arms in front of us in the centre and alternately we cross the left arm in front of the right and then the right arm in front of the left. Rudolf Steiner described the E as ‘being touched and maintaining oneself, maintaining oneself while being touched.’
You can find a link to our detailed video on the E in the description below.
If we perform the E in pairs, we make a cross shape on the floor. To avoid bumping into each other, we determine who goes first at the crossing and are very attentive to each other.
Now we simultaneously make the E gesture with our arms. If we walk diagonally to the right, we keep our left arm in front and if we walk diagonally to the left, we keep our right arm in front. It is important that we are attentive to each other, both when walking the form and when performing the gesture with our arms.
This health exercise strengthens the heart.
Rudolf Steiner described this health exercise as follows: ‘Think of any kind of E-movement that can be performed with the arms, projected onto the floor, and this movement is created: this line crossing diagonally with this line. [...] and now you walk, accompanying the whole with an E-movement of the arms, walk in such a way that you pass each other and take care not to bump into each other. [...] And this paying attention, this paying attention to each other and also to the E gesture, that is what works together with the movement here. So this execrise can only be performed by two people. When it is performed by two people, it is essentially what you could call a strengthening of the heart, i.e. everything that is connected with the phenomena that are usually described as strengthening the heart.’
This health exercise can also be performed by a healthy and a sick person. Rudolf Steiner: ‘[...] perhaps one must then arrange for the healthy person not to do the E-movement with the arms.
