Tiger 1 Tank with Leopard 1 & Leopard 2 - Tank Museum, Bovington

Their Tiger 1 tank, unit coded 131, was on display in the main tank hall of the museum from where it was started up and moved out into the Kuwait arena, where it was driven around in front of the large crowd. As well as a number of other tanks that were also on show in the arena, the Tank Museums own Canadian Leopard C2 tank - an export version of the Leopard 1 - and a Dutch Leopard 2A4 were also on show and put through their paces next to the Tiger tank. The Dutch Leopard 2A4 is one of only 2 that have been retained in Holland as working museum vehicles, following their retirement from Dutch Army service and the sale of the remaining Dutch Leopard 2A4s to Finland. The Dutch Army have since reformed a single tank unit and are now equipped with more advanced Leopard 2A5 and 2A6 tanks that they lease from Germany. The Tiger 1 tank is officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger 1 Ausf.E (SdKfz 181). 1354 Tiger 1 tanks were made between 1942 and 1944. Of these only 6 that are substantially intact survive and this Tiger 1 is the only one that is currently in running order. The Tank Museums Tiger1, known as ’Tiger 131’, was captured by the British Army, during an action against German Africa Corps troops and tanks at Gueriat el Atach, Tunisia (known as Point 174), during an attack there by 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters on 24 April 1943. The Tiger, although only lightly damaged, was disabled by a lucky 6 pounder round shot from the main gun of a British Churchill Tank from 48th Royal Tank Regiment, which was supporting the Sherwood Foresters from some way behind, the shell becoming lodged in the Tiger tanks turret ring preventing it from operating. The Tiger was abandoned by its crew, who fortunately failed to ignite the demolition charge that was carried in all Tiger tanks.
