We recovered a forgotten audio record from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (1987)

We transcribed and restored a previously lost audio tape recorded in 1987 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A person speaking is Michael Umanets – the second post-disaster director. What is being said is a chance to get an insight into how things were going there just one year after the Chernobyl accident. At the time this was recorded, the situation at the Chernobyl Zone passed the hardest point. It became clear that there won’t be any return to the city of Pripyat apart from using it for operative purposes. Most of the power plant workers at that time either were deployed to the Green Cape semi-permanent camp located at Strakholissya village or started to receive apartments in larger cities. The power plant operated by longer shifts instead of the classical 8 8 8 hours scheme. The construction of a new, replacement city – Slavutich – has been ongoing.
