Iceberg A-68 drifts away from Larsen-C Ice Shelf, Antarctica
Iceberg A-68 has calved off the Larsen-C Ice Shelf in July 2017. Using European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite, scientists observed the A-68 iceberg starting to drift away from the Larsen-C, with open ocean clearly visible in the ~ 5 kilometre gap between the berg and the ice-shelf. Larsen-C Ice Shelf is the largest remaining ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula and the calving event reduced its total area by ~10%.
