Detours: An experimental dance collaboration

(Please read this entire description before asking questions.) While called “an experimental dance collaboration“, this is really a documentary covering four unique underground dancers as well as the gamut of their style, including and influenced by popping, breaking, locking, bboying, hitting, animation, walking, and everything inbetween: David Bernal as Elsewhere Serouj Aprahamian as Midus Roberto Lambaren as Rawbzilla Jacob Lyons as Kujo Elsewhere and Midus were the primary producers, but did not produce all of the segments. Kujo’s solo video “Kujo, the Flying Water Buffalo“ was created by Chronos, Bike and Kujo prior to 2001, and was a major influence on Elsewhere: “This video changed the way I thought about dance videos. The whole video is dope and edited better than most Bboy videos. What really inspired me was the final Free Willy scene. This scene was groundbreaking in my eyes because it was the first time in a Bboy video that I saw editing used artistically to compliment dancing. For me, this scene crossed the boundaries between dancing and video art and made me realize the potential of what video could do for dancing.“ Archived website of the project (requires Flash to access some sections): :// Sadly, the discussion forums were not archived. Footage was processed from the original Detours: Extended Trails 2-DVD set. The original documentary is made up of hundreds of original analog and DV sources in wildly varying conditions, so no attempt was made to remaster it scene-by-scene, only transcode it to be faithful to the original source material. While the DVD set itself is from 2004, the footage on it was filmed as early as the late 1990s, so IMO it’s proper to call this a snapshot of four unique artists from roughly 1997-2004, despite the 2001/2004 copyright date. NOTE: With unlicensed use of commercial media, several pieces of music had to be muted in order for it to stay up on YouTube. Please don’t blame me, but instead blame the USA’s utterly broken copyright system. The complete documentary with original soundtrack is available on Vimeo, although it is a worse conversion at 30p, so the fluidity of motion is completely lost.
