On Monday, the president said hospitals in the densely populated territory of 2.3 million people “must be protected” as Israel carries out its response to terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 Israelis. His comments came as Israeli forces approached the Al-Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City. The hospital is without electricity and fuel. The Israeli government said the hospital houses a Hamas military command center.
