This Week in Volcano News; Kilauea & Mayon Volcanoes Erupt, Iliamna False Alarm

The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii and the Mayon volcano in the Philippines both produced new volcanic eruptions. The eruption of Mayon followed a period of ground deformation and an increasing number of rockfalls while the Kilauea eruption followed an increase in earthquake activity. This week also saw the temporary raising of Iliamna’s alert level in Alaska, but this was soon lowered back to green. And, in Mexico, the alert level of the Popocatepetl volcano was lowered back to yellow phase 2 from a prior rating of yellow phase 3.
