Severe hailstorm hits Pietermaritzburg. A blanket of white covered the ground in parts of Pietermaritzburg as a severe hailstorm swept through the city. What started off as light rain soon turned into a major storm. Roads were flooded and vehicles damaged when hail stones pelted down. The roofs of many houses were also damaged. A strong hail wind broke off branches and even whole trees. The hailstones were mostly about size of a golf ball. Road crashes were also reported during the storm. Earlier the South African Weather Service had issued a yellow level 2 warning for thunderstorms. ------------------------
