Bolivia: Country’s second-largest lake turns into desert

The second-largest lake in Bolivia after Titicaca has suffered an accelerated process of desertification that many experts consider irreversible. Cristina Mamani Choque, a local resident, explained how before “the fishermen used to go out with their boats with loads of fish and we traveled from here to sell to Oruro, La Paz,“ but “now it has dried up and there is nothing left.“ The Poopo was an important natural resource for the locals, who fished in its waters and cultivated along its banks years ago.
