Alphonso X, the son of the warrior king Ferdinand III, comes to power. While a powerful sovereign in his own right, the new king is enamored by wisdom and knowledge. His actions personify him more as a philosopher king than a warrior. His ambitions, however, lead him to seek the title of the Holy Roman Emperor, but in doing so, he is blinded to the domestic demands of his powerful kingdom.
