just friends? - Julie Williams (Official Music Video)

I was inspired to write this song after touring with my friend and fellow Black Opry artist, Denitia. She has a song called “Old Friend” and after hearing the song night after night, I began reflecting on some of my past friendships. I thought of some friends that I am not in contact with anymore and questioned why some of those friendship-endings felt like breakups. I wonder, if I went back knowing who I am now, if those relationships would have ended up differently.
With this song, I wanted to capture both the sadness of nostalgia and the beautiful confusion of young love and discovering one’s identity.

Lyrics:
First door when you walked in the dorm
Couldn’t missed you if I tried
Drinking shitty vodka with boys cause we were bored
But I’d leave with you at the end of the night
Then we’d collapse on my gray rug laughing
Give each other fake tattoos
I etched my name and blue stars on your body
Cause that’s what girlfriends do
And we were just friends
Just friends
My mom laughed when I told her all about you
Said we were joined at the hip
(We’d) Talk all night like no one else mattered
Till somebody else did
Kissed him under a lamp post in October
And ran to tell you how it felt
Looking back now I wonder if it hurt you
That I met somebody else
But we were just friends
Just friends
Just friends
We were just friends
I wonder what you’re doing now
Are our memories the same
Did you find another rug to stain blue
Did you ever wash off my name
And if we met on some random street corner
Instead of meeting way back when
(Would we) shut down the bar, wind up back on my floor
Would our story still end
As just friends (if I knew who I am now, would we be together somehow)
Just friends (go back and start it all again, would I just be your friend)
Just friends (if I knew who I am now, would we be together somehow)
Just friends
