Three dead as Typhoon Shanshan batters southern Japan

A powerful typhoon has made landfall in Japan, with three people already confirmed dead. Typhoon Shanshan landed in Kagoshima prefecture, in the southern island of Kyushu, at around 08:00 local time. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued its rare “special warning“ for the most violent storms, warning of landslides, flooding and large-scale damage. A couple in their 70s and a man in his 30s have died. Both were part of a family of five whose home in the centre of the country was swept away late on Tuesday, prior to the typhoon’s landfall.
