Cries of London part I - Orlando Gibbons | Ars Nova Copenhagen

Recorded live September 2020 in Copenhagen. Ars Nova Copenhagen conducted by Paul Hillier. Cries of London by Orlando Gibbons is a beautiful example of an entire genre that collects cries and songs from the city’s street vendors and beggars - hear for example Cris de Paris by Clément Janequin and Three Stages by Pelle Gudmundsen Holmgreen. Cries of London begins with the night watchman’s morning call, after which Gibbons weaves a whole day’s call into the music: street vendors selling fish, oysters, fruit, ink, lace, clothes, and all sorts of other things; a rat catcher performing his trade; a man in search of a lost horse; a chimney sweep; a patient begging on behalf of the insane inmates of Bedlam. At the end, the guard returns and heralds midnight. Ars Nova Copenhagen singers: Else Torp, Ann Christin Wesser Ingels, Hanna Kappelin Hanne Marie le Fevre, Laura Lamph, Elenor Wiman, Luís Toscano, Nils Greenhow, Jakob Skjoldborg Asger Lynge Petersen, Danny Purtell, Mikkel Tuxen
