“Close Friends with China, Seek Friendship with Russia“ Indonesia Denies “Joint“ Pentagon Statement

Indonesia’s military chief has denied issuing any shared statements with his US counterpart during a visit to Washington last week. This comes after the Pentagon published a “joint” press release attributed to Jakarta which criticised Moscow and Beijing. Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto said the US statement does not reflect his country’s position, as per the Kompas newspaper. The minister went on to announce plans to visit Beijing and Moscow in the coming months. Subianto said he hoped that Jakarta could serve as a “bridge” between different countries. However, the Pentagon statement, released on Aug. 24, said that Subianto and Austin Lloyd shared similar views on China and Russia.
