It is the largest animal known to have ever existed, measuring a maximum confirmed length of 29.9 meters (98 feet) and weighing up to 199 tonnes (196 long tons; 219 short tons). The long, lean body of the blue whale can be a variety of colors of greyish-blue on top and a little lighter below. There are four recognized subspecies: B. m. brevicauda (the pygmy blue whale) in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, B. m. intermedia in the Southern Ocean, B. m. musculus in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, and B. m. indica in the Northern Indian Ocean. Additionally, a population that could make up a fifth subspecies can be found in the waters around Chile. Generally speaking, blue whale populations move between their winter breeding grounds near the tropics and their summer feeding sites close to the poles. Additionally, there is proof of seasonal migration and partial or sex- or age-based migration. Blue whales are filter feeders, and krill makes up almost all of their food. Apart from mother-calf connections, they often live alone or in small groups and lack a definite social structure. The production of vocalizations by blue whales can vary by geography, season, behavior, and time of day. The fundamental frequency range for their vocalizations is 8 to 25 Hz. Their only true predators are orcas. After a hectic day, calming nature films are a terrific way to decompress.
