“A War Within a War“ is a U.S. Marine Corps Special Film Report about the battle for the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people. Made in an optimistic era, before the Communists gained the advantage and American losses surged, the film does not hint at the defeat that would come. “In the final victory,“ explains the narrator, “it will not be who holds the ground, but who holds the allegiance of the people that win this war.“ The film, which likely dates to 1965 or 66, shows images of U.S. Marines inspecting a captured Vietnamese village, including looking at underground installations at the :30 mark. At 1:00, villagers are given food, baths, medical care, and other assistance. Vietnamese farmers and fishermen are seen, caught between the demands of the Viet Cong and the American forces and their allies.
