Painting: The Lament for Icarus by Herbert James Draper
In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete. Although originally built to imprison the Minotaur (a half-man, half-bull monster), the Labyrinth later became Daedalus’s own prison when Minos had him confined there.
Icarus and Daedalus attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus, however, ignored Daedalus’ instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt. He fell out of the sky, plunged into the sea, and drowned. The myth gave rise to the idiom “don’t fly too close to the sun“.
