The surrender of Kherson has left Russia with no forward motion on the battlefield. Ukraine’s likelihood of retaking more territory before winter stops some heavy equipment from moving grows with every passing day. None of the mobilized units of any sizable advantage will be trained or equipped at least semi-properly before next February. So now, in November, Russia launches more than 100 targeted missile attacks at public utilities and power infrastructure. Putin wants to make people suffer in the cold and dark, and needs to send this message to as many people as he can. Elsewhere this week in Russia, a medieval pipe-wielding execution is widely held up as a routinely terrifying reminder that sometimes solutions just present themselves and men act accordingly.
