Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll Tina Turner meets Charles and Diana (1986)

Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll, has died aged 83. Beginning in the 1950s, for decades Turner continued and exemplified the traditional, bedrock contribution of Black female voices to the rock genre – all the while surviving an abusive relationship with her husband and creative partner, Ike Turner. In the 1980s, a solo career brought new levels of fame, with Turner becoming and remaining one of the biggest names in pop music. Other titanic public figures have been paying tribute to Turner. Stars including Mariah Carey and Oprah Winfrey have paid testament to Turner as a “survivor”, Carey calling her “an inspiration to women everywhere”. Mick Jagger, who admitted to taking inspiration from Turner’s high-energy performances, called her “enormously talented” and a “wonderful friend”. Beyoncé described Turner as “the epitome of power and passion” and thanked the star for “all the ways you have paved the way.” Barack Obama referred to Turner as a “dear friend” with a “boundless passion for life”. On 20 June 1986, Tina Turner joined other big pop names at a charity concert at London’s Wembley Stadium to celebrate the 10th birthday of The Prince’s Trust.
