Seurat’s Bathers from Wynwood Walls (2023), by Stephen Goss
Wynwood Walls, for guitar and string quartet, draws on 9 artworks which lend their titles to the 9 connected sections of the quintet. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble. The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre. The two sections that bookend the piece are Bathers at Asnières, which suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, and Seurat’s Bathers which evokes Howard Hodgkin’s colourful reworking of the Seurat.
