This was a National Geographic style experience that I’ve been looking forward to for a LONG time. It’s the newest country in the world and was my 150th country visited (of 193 U.N. countries). The South Sudanese Mundari Tribe uses cow urine showers and ash from dung fires smeared on the skin to fight infection and repel mosquitos. The tribe I spent two days camping with had 1,000 bulls, their prized possessions which represent wealth, status and dowry. It also means a LOT of cow shit and it’s the children who clean it up in the morning, pile it up and BURN it all day as insect repellent to keep malaria carrying mosquitos away. The tribespeople were very welcoming and curious. Watch as we sing together - they especially like to sing Baby Shark and Surfing Bird. I follow young tribesmen as they begin their daily routine - brushing teeth with a stick, dousing their head under a streams of urine from a cow and drinking milk straight from the cow’s udder.
