Not quite a sequencer and not quite a programming language, ORCΛ is a live-coding programming environment for creating rhythmic and melodic sequences and semi-random events. It’s fairly limited - you only get up to 26 variables, everything is tied to physical position, and your range of values are 0-36: no more, no less.
Within these constraints emerge a number of interesting sequencing methods and randomness that is difficult to extract from a modular synthesizer or even a more open environment like Max/MSP.
In this video, ORCΛ is controlling a Roland Boutique JP-08 realization of the famed Jupiter synthesizer. The synth sounds awesome, especially with all the places you can inject noise as source of modulation. With the exception of the occasional voice-stealing (the JP-08 has a max polyphony of 4), the two are a great pair and a fantastic way to explore ORCΛ’s creative potential.
