Time-lapse + Thermal Overlay, The Sept 2023 Kilauea Eruption

We combined and synchronized two USGS webcams that captured the most recent eruption of Kilauea, the thermal F1cam and the wider angle KWcam. The summit eruption lasted less than a week, between September 10th and 16th, but it created some spectacular sites inside the Kilauea Caldera. The eruption started out strong with multiple large fountains, but lava flows and fountains quickly diminished in intensity until there was but a trickle, and then nothing. We now await the return of lava to the surface of Kilauea, which if recent activity has shown us anything we shouldn’t be waiting all that long.
