French president Macron’s remarks on Taiwan spark backlash

Escalating tensions over Taiwan have caused friction in Europe, where French President Emmanuel Macron has come under fire. He had said Europe should avoid getting dragged into a confrontation between the US and China. Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party have endorsed Mr Macron’s concept of strategic autonomy. The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China has said his words undermine the international community’s decades-long commitment to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.
