China regularly experiences torrential rains, especially during the summer months, leading to frequent flooding. This week, two tropical cyclones are expected to bring storms and heavy rains to China’s eastern coast. One of the cyclones, named Prapiroon after the Thai rain god, is set to hit Hainan, China’s southernmost island province. Prapiroon formed in the South China Sea and is gaining strength as it moves towards land. Its center was approximately 280 kilometers from the city of Wanning as of the latest report. According to the National Meteorological Center, the maximum wind speed near its center will reach up to 120 km/h. Extreme rains have hit southern, central, and eastern China during this particularly severe flood season. The flood season started earlier than usual this year, causing widespread disruption. Record rainfall impacted southern China from April to June, leading to significant damage. Meanwhile, dry weather in the north has scorched fields, exacerbating agricultural challenges. The drought in northern China threatens the agricultural yield, affecting food supplies. Emergency services are on high alert across the affected regions, ready to respond to further incidents.
