Real Book Drumming ist eine YouTube-Serie von mir, in welcher ich Chorusse von Songs aus dem Real Book, der Bibel für alle Jazzer, transkribiere und spiele. In diesem Video sind es die ersten 36 Takte des Stücks „Moanin‘“, komponiert von dem Pianisten Bobby Timmons, von dem 1959 veröffentlichten Album „Moanin’“ von Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, aufgenommen am 30. Oktober 1958 in dem Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City. Am Schlagzeug selbstverständlich der Bandleader Art Blakey. In diesem Video gibt es jedoch noch eine alternative Aufnahme. Der erste Teil des Videos ist eine Transkription dessen, was man aus der original Aufnahme tatsächlich heraushören kann, der zweite Teil ist eine Interpretation des Grooves im B-Teil und des Solos aufgrund eines Livevideos von Moanin‘, in welchem man sehen kann, wie Art Blakey seinen berühmten Shuffle spielt, was vermuten lässt, das er ihn auch so auf der original Aufnahme zum Besten gegeben hat, aber in Folge von Aufnahmemöglichkeiten und Frequenzüberschneidungen man nicht jede Nuance zu hören bekommt. Interessant sind hierbei besonders die Ghostnotes auf den Zählzeiten ‚1‘ und ‚3‘ und dass Art Blakey den Shuffle nicht im Stile eines „Chicago Shuffle“ auf der Snaredrum durchspielt, sondern die Ghostnotes vor den Backbeat setzt. In this video, it’s the first 36 measures of the piece “Moanin’,“ composed by pianist Bobby Timmons, from the 1959 album “Moanin’“ by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, recorded on October 30, 1958, at Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City. On drums, of course, the band leader Art Blakey. However, there is an alternate recording in this video. The first part of the video is a transcription of what you can actually hear from the original recording, the second part is an interpretation of the groove in the B-section and the solo based on a live video of Moanin’, in which you can see Art Blakey playing his famous shuffle, which suggests that he also performed it on the original recording, but due to recording possibilities and frequency overlaps you don’t get to hear every nuance. Especially interesting are the ghost notes on the beats ’1’ and ’3’ and the fact that Art Blakey doesn’t play through the shuffle in the style of a “Chicago Shuffle“ on the snare drum, but puts the ghost notes before the backbeat.
