Russian S-300, S-400, and S-500 Missile Defense System in Action

The S-500 Prometey, also known as 55R6M “Triumfator-M“, is a Russian surface-to-air missile or anti-ballistic missile system intended to replace the A-135 missile system currently in use, and supplement the S-400. Initially planned to be in production by 2014, finally first delivered in 2021. The S-400 Triumf, previously known as the S-300 PMU-3, is a mobile, surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed in the 1990s by Russia’s Almaz Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering as an upgrade to the S-300 family. On April 28, 2007, the S-400 went into service and the first battalion of the newest surface-to-air missile systems assumed combat duty on August 6, 2007. The S-300 is a series of initially Soviet and later Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by NPO Almaz, based on the initial S-300P version. The system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Subsequent variations were developed to intercept ballistic missiles. The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979.
