Cannae - 216 BC, the famous battle of the Carthaginian Punic military commander, Hanibaal. The First Punic War (264 - 241 BC) ended in victory for the Romans, their peace terms demanded the permanent Carthaginian withdrawal from Sicily & annual payments of tons of silver to Rome. In 238 BC Carthage was obliged to relinquish control of Sardinia to Rome, which was the price for it’s neutrality in a bitter war that had flared up between Carthage and its disaffected North African mercenaries. Blocked in central Mediterranean, Carthage turned it’s attention to Spain, New Carthage were established in 228 BC.
