Five men entering a train carriage in London bound for the fictional town of Bradley are joined by a sixth, the mysterious Doctor Schreck (Peter Cushing) whose name, he claims, is German for “terror“. During the journey, the doctor opens his pack of Tarot cards (which he calls his “House of Horrors“) and proceeds to reveal the horrifying destiny of each traveller. This provides the framework to tell five chilling horror stories.
Produced by Max Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky and directed by Freddie Francis, this was Amicus Productions’ first attempt at a portmanteau horror film based on the earlier film Dead of Night (1945).
