The SLUMS of EUROPE: The hidden side of Europe!

The UN estimates the number of people living in slums at nearly one billion. In the collective imagination, Europe represents an ideal place where life is more prosperous and wealth more abundant. Yet 30 million people are believed to be living in slums. The United Nations has established five criteria for defining slums. These elements are: lack of access or inappropriate access to safe water, inappropriate access to infrastructure - electricity for example and sanitation, overcrowding in informal housing generally located on the outskirts of city centers and finally insecurity and occupation instability. In Europe, slums remain a very little known and invisible reality. They have become the specific places of marginality and discrimination. Sometimes used as the sole result of the migratory invasion, their existence thus feeds this fear of the Other and contributes to this stigmatization of poverty and precariousness. The slums respond above all to a need to survive with the means at hand and in a collective desire to emerge from destitution and uncertainty. In this video, we’ll explore the other side of the European El Dorado myth and uncover some of Europe’s slums, some even considered to be the worst that can exist on the continent.
