The UN Security Council passes a Gaza ceasefire resolution

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza “for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire.“ The resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and to allow more humanitarian aid to Gaza. The US abstained during the vote rather than use its veto power. The rest of the members voted in favour. This vote comes six months into Israel’s war on Gaza and four previous failed attempts by the UN Security Council to demand a ceasefire. Shortly after the vote, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled meetings that his senior advisers were supposed to have with the Biden administration later this week.
