Afghan Women’s Rights Activist Arrives in Germany After Fleeing Pakistan

Prominent Afghan women’s rights activist Zarifa Ghafari arrived in Germany late Monday after fleeing from Afghanistan via Pakistan last week. Being greeted by Armin Laschet, the governor of Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia state and leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Ghafari stressed that she did not come to Germany “as migrants“. Ghafari became the mayor of the Afghan town of Maidan Shahr in 2018, at the age of 26.
