This day is very special for the translation world as the United Nations General Assembly, recognizing the global importance of translation, passed a resolution on 24 May 2017 and recognized the day of 30 September as International Translation Day. Translation Day is celebrated every year in memory of St. Jerome, the famous and oldest translator and mentor of the Bible. Set Jerome studied the Hebrew Bible and translated it into Latin.
The International Federation of Translators (FIT), since its inception in 1953, celebrated Translation Day as a way to honor St. Jerome and to support his community of linguists and the profession of translation. Although it was celebrated religiously until 1991, as St. Jerome was a translator of the Bible, the FIT later renamed it International Translation Day in 1991. The International Translation Day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly on 24 May 2017 by passing resolution 71/288 and announcing the day of 30 September as International Translation Day.
Just as other United Nations days are important, International Translation Day is also very important day because through this day, translation works and translators, interpreters and people working in the language and translation fields in languages of all countries and To give importance to the role of institutions and promote unity among the worldwide translation community.
Today, various dialogues, symposia, seminars and workshops related to translation are organized in universities, educational institutions and translation service organizations all over the world including India and meaningful on the status, situation, importance, technique, possibilities, history and future of translation. Is discussed.
Losing a single language is a big loss because the language consists not only of words but also of cultures. An entire culture disappears due to the disappearance of a single language. Translators and interpreters are a type of cultural messenger, ie “cultural ambassadors“. Historically, we come to know that translation originated from the propagation of religion and religious texts, but slowly changing the translation, not only religious area but also civilization, culture, communication, commerce, business, intercultural dialogue , Not only necessary for tourism, software, internet etc. but has become mandatory.
In India, the language academies and institutions like Sahitya Akademi, National Book Trust, Publications Department, National Translation Mission, Central Hindi Institute, Hindi Granth Academy etc. are playing a leading role in the field of written translation. Along with this, IIT, C. DAC, TDIL etc. are doing machine translation work. Some institutions like Sahitya Akademi, National Book Trust are undertaking projects for translation work from Indian languages to foreign languages and foreign languages from Indian languages.
Every International Translation Day has a theme. This year, the theme of International Translation Day in 2020 is “Finding the words for a world in crisis“.
