Rescued by Rover, is a film from 1905 directed by Cecil Milton Hepworth
A boy is kidnapped and consequently saved by the heroic dog Rover, a great grandfather of the famous Lassie and all heroic dogs in the history of cinema. With this film the director seems to be establishing, once and for all, the rules of contiguity editing: in all the shots of Rover running toward the lair, the dog moves forward through the space of one shot, exits to the left of the camera, and comes into the space of the next shot, still running forward and exiting left. On the way back, Rover exits to the right of the camera. Contiguity editing helps audience keep track of spatial relations.
