Russia: St Petersburg locals flout coronavirus isolation rules to enjoy sunny spring weather

Despite the strict self-isolation measures imposed in St Petersburg to curb the spread of the coronavirus, many locals could be seen strolling outside and enjoying the sunny weather on Wednesday. Under the restrictions announced by authorities, residents are prohibited from leaving their homes except in cases of emergency or in order to seek medical help or to do essential shopping. Public transport in the city has also been limited. New measures set to go into force on April 18 in St Petersburg will penalise those who take part in mass events, keep shops and restaurants open or hold other mass activities. The Baltic Sea city, which has a population of 5.4 million, has diagnosed 373 COVID-19 cases according to official figures.
